Columbia Basin Dive Rescue (CBDR)is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that provides water rescue and recovery services to agencies throughout a five-county area surrounding the Tri-Cities.
CBDR members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, covering a response area of more than 4,000 square miles, including 300 miles of major river systems and countless lakes, ponds and canals. Emergency responders are assigned to duty crews to ensure that at least one full dive crew is available to respond at all times. On major missions, however, it is common for all available divers and surface support to respond. The team’s response area is the largest in the state of Washington and one of the largest in the country. As an authorized agency of the Department of Emergency Management, CBDR also may be called to assist with incidents across the state.
Missions, which average 50 per year, range from swimming and boating accidents to suicide attempts and underwater crime scene investigations. To prepare for the diversity of missions and to ensure proper skill level, emergency responders (divers and surface support personnel) must complete an extensive training program supplemented with required, bi-monthly trainings.
CBDR has no paid employees and is completely dependent on community and agency donations to fund operations. Currently, CBDR consists of 19 divers and surface support personnel as well as five administrative involved in a variety of non-emergency activities, including fundraising, education, public speaking, special events, general office duties, etc. All team members are committed to CBDR’s water safety education program, which reaches more than 20,000 mid-Columbians through presentations and classes for both children and adults.
